The winter is starting to get to me, I think. Not the chill - it is warm enough inside, and I deal with the cold on a daily basis at work. Not the quiet - quiet I like, and even so winter days are filled with laughter and the noise of every other day. But the white...

I stare out the window now and it is all I see around, apart from the slate gray of the sidewalks and charcoal black of the highway - the yellow lines down the center could be a comfort for the more artistically inclined, but also pop out as a shocking disturbance, not part of the spectrum of the winter scene. Luckily they are barely visible...

An even more shocking color to see against the white frost is red. Red and black, and again the yellow-orange of the centerlines - a cardinal pecking at the frost for something it could scavage for a meal. This red is soon to be intensified by the orange-and-black splotched calico perched on the limb above the bird, should it catch its prey off-guard. Of course, a bird's first instinct is to fly, and if it is startled by having something dropped upon it, it is sure to be spent- screech out a last shrill chirp before the feline silences it.

One wonders - if the cat jumps, will the bird notice in time?
